YouTube Partner Program 2027 — What Every Creator Needs to Know

August 27, 2026 4 min read DigitalPox Team

YouTube has announced the first significant changes to the YouTube Partner Program (YPP) since 2018. These updates affect how creators earn from Shorts, what thresholds new creators need to meet, and how YouTube Premium Lite revenue is distributed. If you distribute your music or content through DigitalPox and monetise on YouTube, here is everything you need to know.

What Is the YouTube Partner Program?

The YouTube Partner Program is the system through which YouTube pays creators for their content. Launched nearly 20 years ago, it currently has over 3 million creators enrolled globally. It is the primary way independent artists, musicians, and content creators earn directly from their YouTube presence.

YouTube has stated that despite these changes, they expect to pay even more to creators in 2027 than they did in 2026.

Change 1 — YouTube Premium Lite Expansion

YouTube is expanding Premium Lite to all countries where YouTube Premium is available. Premium Lite is a lower-cost subscription tier that offers ad-free, offline, and background viewing of most content.

For creators, this introduces a new revenue pool. Here is how the revenue split works:

  • YouTube Premium subscribers generate a pool equal to 30% of net subscription revenue
  • YouTube Premium Lite subscribers generate a pool equal to 60% of net subscription revenue
  • This pool is distributed to creators based on member watch time and views
  • From that distribution, creators receive: 55% revenue share for long-form videos and 45% for Shorts

According to YouTube, when a user upgrades to Premium, partners on average earn more than when that same user was watching on the free, ad-supported tier.

Change 2 — YouTube Shorts Revenue Sharing Update

This is the change that will affect the most creators. YouTube is updating how Shorts revenue is distributed, with the new rules taking effect from 1 February 2027.

From that date, a creator must have at least 10 million qualified Shorts views in the last 90 days to be eligible for ads and subscription revenue sharing specifically on Shorts.

Here is what happens if you fall below that threshold:

  • Your channel remains in YPP
  • You continue earning on your long-form video content as normal
  • Shorts revenue sharing pauses until you cross the 10 million view threshold again

YouTube has also said it is introducing new incentive programmes for smaller channels, including bonuses for YouTube Shopping, incentives for brand deals, and earnings boosts for starting and growing trends. Further details on these programmes will be shared separately.

Change 3 — New YPP Entry Requirements for New Creators

The entry requirements for YPP are being updated for new creators applying to join the programme. This change does not affect creators who are already in YPP.

New creators applying for ads and Premium revenue sharing will now need to meet one of the following:

  • 8,000 qualified watch hours in the last 365 days, or
  • 20 million qualified Shorts views in the last 90 days

The previous thresholds were 4,000 watch hours and 10 million Shorts views respectively. The entry requirements for Fan Funding features and YouTube Shopping products remain unchanged.

When Do These Changes Take Effect?

The Shorts revenue sharing update and the new entry thresholds both take effect on 1 February 2027. Creators currently in YPP can review and sign the updated terms within YouTube Studio. The terms must be accepted before February 1, 2027.

What This Means for Musicians and Independent Artists

If you are a musician distributing music through DigitalPox, your YouTube Content ID earnings and any revenue from your official artist channel are managed separately from YPP in most cases. However, if you also run a YouTube channel where you post original video content, these changes apply to you directly.

The most important points for independent artists to note:

  • If your Shorts are growing but you are below 10 million views per 90 days, your Shorts ad revenue will pause from February 2027. Your long-form content earnings continue unaffected.
  • If you are not yet in YPP, the watch hour requirement has doubled. Focus on long-form content to reach the 8,000 hour threshold.
  • Premium Lite expansion is a positive development — more subscribers means a larger revenue pool for all creators.
